On November 3, 2023, the New Hudson Tunnel project in New York officially started, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and many other US political leaders attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
Built under the Hudson River, the 3.8-km, two-tube tunnel will create a new link between New York and New Jersey. In addition, the project will renovate the 112-year-old North River Rail tunnel, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
Earlier this year, the project received an additional $292 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, bringing the total cost of the project to $16.3 billion.
